Resident Art Show Raises $10k
May 26, 2011
The Resident Artists show at the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt home raised over $10,000. That’s over $10k worth of artwork, photoshoots, raffle tickets, and more importantly, dozens of smiling faces from the seniors living at the home.
I remember the first time I saw their art work at the Capital Breast Care Center office with my friend Jennifer Harlow. We were there for completely different reasons and when the Director of Development, Susannah Fox, told me that the art work hanging on their walls were from the LLDH home, I was instantly floored. And when I learned that the home served low to no income seniors, I instantly knew I had to take their photos.
I knew that with the portraits, I needed someone to write their stories. I’m grateful for Megan Harrington who spent countless hours interviewing each of the Resident Artists and hearing more about their stories and inspiration. The essays that Megan wrote made the art work and the residents come alive and made everyone learn more about each of the Resident Artists. A picture maybe worth a thousand words, but sometimes you actually need words to accurately capture the essence of the individual. Megan is an incredibly talented writer and I’m grateful for her time, support, and excitement about this project.
At the same time that we were planning the exhibit, I knew that I wanted to get the help of Lindsey Mask, founder of Ladies DC. I sought out her help and support as I felt that her organization was an organization that I wanted to affiliate with. As I knew more about Lindsey, there was no doubt that I was meeting a very special and caring individual. I was really glad that she met me one day (a holiday no less) at Sushiko in Chevy Chase. She instantly saw the art work, felt inspired, and wanted to help as much as possible. What she and Ladies DC have done to promote, support, and raise awareness were simply outstanding. I am also grateful for Clark Seydel, who Lindsey brought with her when we met the staff one evening to help plan the event. It was a tough time for both Lindsey and Clark as they were dealing with a loss, but they took time out of their incredibly busy day to meet with the LLDH staff. Both Lindsey and Clark are wonderful people I hope that everyone can have the opportunity to meet them both.
Around the same time, I met singer Sheena Alexis at an event at Puro Cafe. I actually heard about her and instantly Googled her and found a video on YouTube. I was immediately impressed when I heard her voice and I am so happy that she came out to sing a special song during the LLDH awards ceremony. Her performance brought tears and I’m grateful for her taking the time to be there and also inviting a special band that made this event even more unique. I hope that you will all have the opportunity to see Sheena Alexis perform.
Last and certainly not least, I would like to thank Don Patron for painting portraits of each of the Resident Artists. His work, quite simply, made this event very special for me. For him to take the time out of his busy schedule and paint each portrait quickly and amazingly made this event very special. All of the Resident Artists loved his work and many of them made sure they thanked him and showed their appreciation for his work. Despite the fact that Don has many things on his calendar, I’m grateful that he took the time to work on this project.
Hands down, this was one of the most special projects I’ve ever been involved with. I’m grateful for NBC Washington, Georgetown Dish, Bisnow, and Her Exchange for covering the event and sharing the stories about the LLDH home.
The artwork is always available for viewing. Please feel free to call the home to setup an appointment. You can also view their work at both Sushiko locations in Chevy Chase and Georgetown. I guarantee that you will love it and you will never forget it.
For more info about the home, please visit their website at www.lldhhome.org.
Fashion Empowering Women Presents
“The Vagina Monologues” Apr. 29 & 30, 2011 Downtown Silver Spring
Washington, DC, April 5, 2011—Fashion Empowering Women (FEW) is celebrating V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls—with a benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues” on Friday April 29th and Saturday April 30th at the Montgomery College Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $35 General Admission and $25 Student Admission—available for purchase online at Eventfarm.com/vday2011.
The talented cast of women includes 2011 Grammy Award Nominee Carolyn Malachi,
Christine Brooks-Cropper, President of GWFCC, Delagate Joseline Pena Melnyk Maryland
House of Delegates District 21 (D), Kamilla Collier Mullin, Ms. Black America DC, Lindsey
Mask Founder of Ladies DC, and more. Following the production, FEW will honor Neil
Irvin, Executive Director of Men Can Stop Rape. Men Can Stop Rape (MCSR) is an
international organization that mobilizes men to use their strength for creating cultures free from violence, especially men’s violence against women.
Based on hundreds of interviews conducted by playwright Eve Ensler, “The Vagina
Monologues” are real-life reactions about the treatment of women, a revelation of their
deepest feelings and a celebration of female sexuality. Executive Director Desiree Venn
Frederic said, “The Vagina Monologues give women everywhere a voice to express the joys and pains of being a woman as candidly as possible. Too many women are ashamed of their bodies and keep the violence and atrocities they experience a secret. This must change.”
For 2011, the spotlight will be on the women and girls of Haiti, where high levels of violence including sexual violence, are committed against women and girls since the devastating earthquake that took place in January 2010. The production will also benefit the DC Fashion Foundation, a non-profit organization created by the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce to support the Washington, DC fashion community and Our Place DC, a non- profit organization that provides direct services and advocacy to help women from DC rebuild their lives after a period of incarceration.

Ladies DC is pleased to receive a “loving hand” from Mrs. Virginia, Eileen Lopez Vega, for the group’s Valentine’s philanthropy event this Saturday, February 12, 10am-12pm ET.
Members of the professional women’s organization will be at 1300 Massachusetts Ave NW Thomas Circle Residences “painting the nails of senior female residents so they know they aren’t forgotten on this special holiday,” said Lindsey Mask, founder and president of Ladies DC.
“I am thrilled to be a part of this Saturday's event and spending time with these female residences in making them feel special and cared for. After all, the true meaning of a holiday like Valentine's Day is to show and extend our care to others. Some of these women may not receive the pampering and attention they deserve, and I look forward to making these women feel loved, cared for and hopefully special, ” said Eileen Lopez Vega, who currently holds the title of Mrs. Virginia United States.

Ladies DC to Serve as Sponsor for DC’s First Ever
Entrepreneur Week Nov. 15 - 19, 2010
WASHINGTON, D.C – Ladies DC (LDC) is set to serve as a sponsor for the first ever D.C. Entrepreneur Week (DCEW), a five- day interactive symposium that focuses on revitalizing and strengthening the local entrepreneurship culture. Designed for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs, DCEW was created out of a desire to bolster the thriving business community in the Washington DC area; a region that boasts the 5th highest concentration of entrepreneurs in the country (Grasshopper Group, July 2010).
“Ladies DC is thrilled to be part DC Entrepreneur Week and the movement towards fostering free enterprise and innovation in our nation’s capital. We find it particularly important that Ladies DC be at the table in these discussions and roundtables, because women are the single fastest growing demographic of small business owners. Over the last ten years, the rate of women owned businesses grew by 44%,” said LDC Founder and DCEW Co-Founder, Lindsey Mask.
“More women are breaking free from the confines of the glass-ceiling and are conquering their fears to pursue the business and profession of their dreams - armed with the power of knowledge, experience, and a healthy network of like-minded individuals trying to make a difference .”
Serving over 800 young, professional women in and around the Washington, D.C. area, Ladies DC (LDC) stands as the most prominent and only all-professional women’s group in the District. LDC blends perfectly with DCEW, which aims to answer pressing ‘real-world’ questions in an intimate setting from business leaders who have paved the way. Attendees will walk away with applicable knowledge, resources and opportunities specific to their industry.
From November 15th – 19th, DCEW will focus on various industry groups such as Digital & Mobile Media, IT, Real Estate, Telecom, Hospitality & Service and ‘Eco Entrepreneurism’ just to name a few.
The members of Ladies DC and female entrepreneurs will find unique value through a wealth of content directly designed for ‘Women in Business’.
Through a series of panel discussions, roundtables and forums designed to integrate educational opportunities with interactive discussions; registrants will gain valuable knowledge and learn from each other and industry innovators to help navigate the course from start-up to empire.
Attendees will have the extraordinary opportunity personally pitch their business plans directly to Venture Capitalist groups such as Core Capital Partners, a $350 million dollar VC firm headquartered in the District.
This week has been designed and created by a group of seasoned entrepreneurial minds to make a difference and support a culture of entrepreneurship in Washington D.C.
Ladies DC is a young, professional women’s organization in Washington, D.C. with over 800 members in a variety of professions that meets once a month for networking, lectures, and other events.
