Five D.C.-Area Women Collaborate in NYC to Bolster Female Entrepreneurship
Hear from some of nation’s leading women who participated in We Own It Summit hosted by Asitia, Dell, Kauffman Foundation & more
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Five D.C.-area women recently united in New York City at the We Own It Summit in an effort to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and innovation of new pathways of success for high-impact female entrepreneurs. The invite-only Summit, sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation, Astia, the Startup America Partnership, Dell and others, brought together industry leaders to explore and reinforce the potential of women as drivers of the economy and to identify strategic avenues to keep them moving forward. Collaborators included entrepreneurs, investors and leaders of organizations and institutions advocating, promoting, accelerating and researching women’s participation in high-growth entrepreneurship. Of these leaders, representing D.C.’s strongest contingent of professional women were President of Springboard Enterprises, Amy Millman; Founder of Ladies America & Ladies DC, Lindsey Mask; Author & Founder of The Intrigue Agency, Sam Horn; Chief Operating Officer of the Startup America Partnership, Kathleen Warner and Managing Director of the Startup America Partnership, Donna Harris.
“Ladies America is thrilled to have collaborated and represented the spirit of entrepreneurial women at the We Own It Summit in NYC,” said Lindsey Mask, Founder of Ladies America. “We are truly witnessing a revolution of women in many areas, including entrepreneurship, innovation and overall leadership. As many know, women hold 80% of the nation’s buying power across the country, but fewer are aware that women owned businesses have grown by 44% over the past ten years.”
Ladies America is a national network of young, professional women following the motto "Women Helping Women”, connecting women to advance one another personally and professionally, ultimately creating a national voice on issues important to professional women. Earlier this year, Springboard Enterprises’ President, Amy Millman represented her organization at the Ladies America annual women’s conference, Women Leading the Future.
“At Springboard Enterprises, we believe deeply in the power of human and financial capital to drive the U.S., indeed the global economy,” said Amy Millman of Springboard Enterprises. “Entrepreneurship is our national heritage, and it will be our future. When women come together, their impact in this space can be truly appreciated. One key to the success of the annual We Own It Summit is the collaboration of participants and partner groups. All the organizations that are represented year after year have been identified as important contributors to women’s entrepreneurship worldwide.”
Venture-catalyst Springboard Enterprises is the premier platform where entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts meet to build great women-led businesses. Springboard educates, sources, coaches, showcases and supports high growth companies seeking equity capital for expansion.
“In 2011, with the support of many of the organizations that collaborated on and planned the We Own It Summit, Startup America launched ‘Startup America Women,’” said Kathleen Warner of the Startup America Partnership. “Our initiative to leverage and highlight women's advocacy and membership groups representing women entrepreneurs and business owners to promote the engagement of women-led high growth startups. It’s opportunities like these where we can join with some of our top partners to showcase the true economic impact women and their entrepreneurial spirit can have on the economy.”
The We Own it Summit was born from an understanding the multitude of women’s conferences and leaders that currently exist are stronger when they join forces, which is similar to the tenets of Ladies America.
“Somewhat like the WOI Summit, Ladies America has become an aggregator of women’s organizations,” said Mask. “The uniqueness of the groups selected from D.C. speaks volumes to the voice women have in the economic debate. I think people will continue to see these female leaders, like Sam Horn, who continues to inspire us; move forward in collaboration, to represent the District of Columbia, the nation and women as a whole.”

Ladies DC Supports DC Entrepreneurship Week – Nov. 14-18, 2011
LDC helps lead three women-specific panels and lectures for aspiring entrepreneurs, pulling in some of the nation’s strongest business leaders
WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the second year in a row, Ladies DC (LDC), the leading professional women’s group in the nation’s capitol, is sponsoring D.C. Entrepreneurship Week (DCEW), a five- day interactive symposium that focuses on revitalizing and strengthening the local entrepreneurship culture. Designed for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs, DCEW was created out of a desire to bolster the thriving business community in the Washington DC area; a region that boasts the 5th highest concentration of entrepreneurs in the country (Grasshopper Group, July 2010).
“Ladies DC is thrilled to be an instrumental part DC Entrepreneur Week again this year,” said Lindsey Mask, Founder of Ladies DC/ Ladies America and Co-founder of DCEW. “We are truly witnessing a revolution of women pursuing business ownership, innovation, and overall leadership. “That said, many women are still feeling a bit of a struggle in sustainability of their small businesses, so it is important that we arm women with the skills and resources they need to make it for the long haul,” Mask continued. That’s why this year, we are putting a great deal of emphasis on basic business ‘how to’s,’ such as how to pitch, how to hire, how to market, how to acquire capital, how to read a term sheet, and more.”
Serving over 1500 young, professional women in and around the Washington, D.C. area, Ladies DC (LDC) stands as the most prominent and only all-professional women’s group in the District. LDC blends perfectly with DCEW, which aims to answer pressing ‘real-world’ questions in an intimate setting from business leaders who have paved the way. Attendees will walk away with applicable knowledge, resources and opportunities specific to their industry.
From November 14th – 18th, DCEW will focus on various industry groups such as Digital & Mobile Media, IT Security, Real Estate, Telecom, and ‘Eco Entrepreneurism’, but this year has an even strong female component:

WASHINGTON, D.C – Ladies DC and the United Nations Foundation are pleased to formally announce that Pat Mitchell, 37-time Emmy winner, first female CEO and President of PBS and current President and CEO of the Paley Center for Media, as the keynote speaker for their day-long conference “Women Leading the Future.” The event will be hosted at the Navy Memorial Heritage Center on Saturday, April 30, 8:30am-3:00pm with an estimated 250 attendees. Tickets are on sale at www.womenleadingthefuture.org. The conference will be followed by a semi-formal cocktail reception at a local popular venue in the evening with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign, which supports the UN’s work to empower adolescent girls.
Mitchell joined The Paley Center for Media from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), where she was named president and chief executive officer in March 2000, the first woman and first producer and journalist to hold the position. During her tenure, she oversaw the development of many new projects, including a celebrated new series for children focusing on teaching literacy skills and celebrating diversity, a testament to her belief in the power of media to empower and inform. She also led public broadcasting into the digital future with such initiatives as the conversion from analog to digital broadcasting, the launch of a high-definition PBS channel and an on-demand and cable preschool children's service, the growth of PBS's website into one of the three most visited sites on the Internet, and the establishment of the Digital Future Initiative to help define models for public service media using new digital technologies.
Since assuming her current role as president and chief executive officer of The Paley Center for Media (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio) in March 2006, Pat Mitchell has guided the thirty-four-year old institution through an exciting rebranding effort and strengthened its public and industry programs by analyzing and interpreting the immense changes in the media landscape. Under her leadership, the Paley Center has become a major convener for media leaders and enthusiasts, continuing to offer its unrivaled collection of radio, television, and advertising content as a lens for exploring the powerful impact of media on our lives, culture, and society.
Ms. Mitchell came to the world of media when she was recruited from college teaching by Look magazine. Not long after, she took her first story to WNBC New York, where she saw her work go from page to screen—and never looked back. Over the next three decades, Ms. Mitchell worked for three broadcast networks and several cable channels, winning national acclaim both in front of and behind the camera as a reporter, news anchor, talk show host, White House and special correspondent, producer, and executive. In the mid-eighties, she established her own independent production company that produced documentaries, series, and specials for broadcast, cable, and national syndication. She became the first woman to nationally syndicate her own show, the Emmy-winning Woman to Woman, which she also hosted.
In 1992, Ms. Mitchell became an executive in charge of original productions for Ted Turner's cable networks. Over the next eight years as executive producer, her documentaries and specials received thirty-seven Emmy Awards, five Peabody Awards, and two Academy Award nominations.
In addition to her accomplishments both on and off the screen, Ms. Mitchell is also known for her humanitarian efforts and her work as a dedicated member of numerous nonprofit boards. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Women’s Forum; the vice chair of the Sundance Institute board; a founding member of Mikhail Gorbachev's global environmental organization, Global Green USA; an adviser to the V-DAY movement to end violence against women; chair of the Jordan River Foundation US Board; a member of the Human Rights Watch board of directors; an adviser to the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School of Harvard University; a member of the Mayo Clinic's board of trustees; and on the corporate board of AOL.
A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia, with a master's degree in English literature, Ms. Mitchell has also been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Emerson College, Hollins University, Bloomsburg University, and Converse College. She and her husband, Scott Seydel, have six children and ten grandchildren and reside in New York and Atlanta, Georgia.
